Post-Whitening Instructions
- Color stabilization usually occurs within 2 weeks after chairside bleaching and home bleaching. Results vary per individual.
- Mild gum or tooth sensitivity may occur with some patients. This will usually diminish within 24 to 48 hours after discontinuing treatment.
- If you encounter any problems with sensitivity and/or gum irritation, discontinue product use immediately and call our office at 520.624.7514. After hours, call 877.692.5601.
- Depending on your lifestyle and the manner in which you maintain your newly whitened teeth, results may last several years. Keep in mind that certain foods, smoking habits, and medications will always have an effect on your teeth and their color.
- To decrease sensitivity of teeth after whitening procedures, avoid citrus fruits and juices until treatment is completed. Teeth will stay whitest when you restrict consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, cola, soy sauce, tomato based foods (ketchup, spaghetti sauce, salsa, etc.), beta-carotene foods (carrots, beets, etc.) and all tobacco products to prolong the whitening results. This is especially critical during the first 2 weeks of treatment. If necessary, consume beverages through a straw and try to clean teeth as soon as possible to keep stain from penetrating the teeth.
- Do not wear trays overnight! A maximum of 30 minutes use is our recommended treatment time for bleaching.

Instructions for Patients with Dentures
- New Dentures will feel uncomfortable at first. Start slow at first by eating soft foods and taking small bites. Try to chew foods on both sides of the back teeth at the same time.
- You will get sore spots in your mouth. When this occurs, you should call the dental clinic right away to schedule a time for an adjustment. Never try to “fix” the dentures yourself.
- Try not to invite comments about your new dentures for at least one week after wearing them. It takes about this long for your mouth to become accustomed to the feel of the dentures.
- Learning to talk with new dentures requires practice and patience. Reading aloud is a good way to learn.
- Dentures should be cleaned after every meal with a denture brush and warm water (not hot water). They should be soaked at night in a cleaning solution such as Polident or Efferdent, etc. Be sure to follow the directions on the package.
- To avoid damage or loss of dentures, the following precautions should be followed:
- Do not wrap dentures in a tissue, paper towel etc. when you take them out of your mouth. Keep them in a denture container with water.
- If you feel that you may throw up, remove your dentures.
- Don’t leave your dentures where children or pets can reach them.
- Don’t try to repair or reline your own dentures.
- If your dentures should break, bring all of the pieces to the dental clinic for repair.
- Shrinkage of the ridges or gums under the dentures will occur. This shrinkage will vary from person to person according to health and age. A dentist should evaluate this at least once a year. When the time is right, a reline or rebase can be done.
- Finally, you will not learn to use your teeth unless you wear them. The younger patient usually adapts to dentures quicker. A lot of time and expense has been invested in your dentures. Now you will need to invest your own determination, practice and patience.

Scaling, Root Planing and Curettage
You have just received a thorough scaling of all plaque and hard deposits (tartar) from beneath the gumline. Root planing and curettage smoothes root surfaces and removes unhealthy tissue so that healthy gum tissue may heal next to the cleaned and smooth tooth surface. This has been done in an attempt to improve your periodontal condition by reducing some of the pocketing present. Post-procedure home care instructions are as follows:
- WARM SALT WATER RINSES: Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 6-8 ounces of warm water. Swish with the solution for a minute, expectorate, and then rinse with plain water. This should be done after each meal and after your daily home care of flossing and brushing and should be continued 2 to 3 days after treatment. This can be used past this time if bleeding upon home care persists
- ORAL HYGIENE: Before bedtime, softly brush your teeth with a toothbrush that has been softened with hot water. Start flossing the next morning. Normal flossing and toothbrushing can then continue as recommended. There may be some discomfort but don’t be discouraged. This will usually last only 1 to 2 days after treatment.
- DIET: Soft foods are best at first. Try to eat on the opposite side of the treated area for 1 to 2 days. Avoid hot foods and drinks for 24 hours. Spicy foods may also cause some discomfort. Please avoid popcorn, nuts and seeds. These hard items get into the pocket areas and may impede the healing process.
- HEALING: A supplement of 500 mg of vitamin C with each meal can be helpful in regenerating healthy tissue 2 weeks after each procedure. Smoking, alcohol and caffeine may impede the healing process.
- MEDICATION: Advil or Tylenol is normally sufficient for pain or any discomfort. Call us if it is not.
- TOOTH SENSITIVITY: Since the tooth and root surfaces have been cleaned of debris, it is possible that some sensitivity may occur. This discomfort is almost always temporary and using toothpaste for sensitive teeth (such as Sensodyne or Denquel) can be helpful.
Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or problems. Remember..Your consistent and thorough home care is the most important factor in healing and eventually maintaining your periodontal condition.
